1.5 hours of pick-up Ultimate frisbee

Afterward, relaxed on the grass with some of the guys that had been playing and took the opportunity to tell them a bit about CrossFit.

I'm going to do the leg work without buying in. I've also got Kevin and our part time coach Rob in on it too. Between the 3 of us, we'll send one person out at least once a week. We've got a list of many different styles of yoga classes from various studios, pilates, kick boxing, ji jitsu, krav, and we'll see what else we can find around and we'll just check them off as we go through them. I loved what Jennifer said on the last call how even if we don't get new members out of it, the experience may help improve the way we run our classes, introduce new people, etc.

Adult Gymnastics Class at Pozsar's in Sacramento

Jen C. and I dropped in for an adult gymnastics class at a local gym. It definitely exposed gymnastics as one of my weaknesses, both as an athlete and a coach. The class was productive and a lot of fun, but I think the instructor was trying to cram everything into an hour and a half for us because he thought we were only going to be there for one class.

11am - 3:45pm

Lushness Volleyball Tournament at Dockweiler Beach - I played in a 4-on-4 volleyball tournament with a friend of mine, and a bunch of her friends. This particular tournament takes place every year - and this was my first time participating. This tournament is more about the costumes, drinking, debauchery, etc. etc. etc. than about the actual volleyball.

I wouldn’t say it was a whole lot of exercise, but it was something new for me - and a whole lot of fun!!

Spin Class, 45 minutes at Hewlett-Packard Fitness Center

I dropped in for a spin class today, my first time. The class was fun, a good way to mix it up, and a decent workout.

The instructor was good. She was friendly and greeted me when I first walked in. Upon finding out it was my first class, she took the time to get my bike setup. Unfortunately, she didn't explain what she did, so I'm not sure I could repeat it on my own. I noticed that she took a moment to say something personally relevant to everyone at some point near the beginning of class.

The class itself was upbeat. She kept the mood light and played some good music, which she used to set the pace for much of the workout. She used imaginary bike race scenarios as motivation (i.e. "you're breaking away from the pack right now!" or "sneaking up on 1st place, and we're about to sprint past them to the finish".) I didn't get much of a sense of community -- despite being a 6-week series with only 10 people, no one really talked to each other.

I hadn't met her before, but the instructor has been in for one of our intros. She's interested and her husband apparent loves CrossFit, but she is intimidated by it. Hopefully it will help that she knows more of us now. I also got to talk to a couple of guys who have expressed curiosity, but have yet to do an intro.

Playing new sports has resulted in three new members this month. CrossFit Ocean City formed a kickball team and participated in a 6-week, 1 game per week league. Our members LOVED it. After one particularily competitive game, my phone rang. It was a woman. She told me that she had heard a lot about CFOC. Seeing it was something else. I asked her what she meant by that. She said, "The women look amazing. They run so fast. All your players look great. And, their butts. OMG!" SHe went on and on and on. Needless to say, I scheduled an intro and she is now a member. Two more women from her team joined within a week. I want the male kickball members from their team. Turns out, one of the guys is an Ophthalmologist with a great reputation. (His wife was the orignal caller.) I need eyecare. I have an appoitment. I'll post on that one later.
So, playing kickball for six weeks allowed us to fish in a new pond. Very productive.

Evening workout at 24-Hour Fitness, approx. 1 hour

Jen C. and I went to 24-Hour Fitness, the biggest globo-gym in town, and did a workout. As soon as we started warming up, we got the attention of a guy who already knew about us through a couple of our current members. During a break in the warmup, I quickly gave him a card and suggested he call or email to find out more. Jen C's Vibrams got the interest of a couple of guys and she did a good job bringing CrossFit into the conversation -- we failed to give them a business card, however.
