Tell us about you sports & fitness background: I grew up breakdancing, skateboarding and playing basketball in PR which helped me immensely with flexibility and assorted monkey stuff. I then spent 5 years in the Marines as a Combat Martial Arts Instructor and Embassy Guard in Japan, Bangladesh and Senegal.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD... what was it, and how did it feel? When I moved to LA from Beijing a couple of years ago, I ended up a whole block away from CFLA and would constantly walk by and witness all the pain and suffering people were subjecting themselves to. I knew right away this was going to be my second home. My first WOD was a 8 minute AMRAP with Mountain Climbers, V-Twists and Pistols, and it gave me flashbacks of 3 hellish months I spent in Parris Island. Much like in boot camp, the sense of accomplishment and camaraderie kept me coming back for more.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? Definitely packed on an ounce or two of muscle since joining CFLA but for me the change I like the most is actually being excited to go work out!
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? The sense of pride I feel in being able to say that I am part of the CrossFit LA family!
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFLA moments: Pre-WOD dancing, witnessing people PR, breaking the Muscle Up record, Saturdays during the Open, those butterflies in my stomach right before a WOD and walking in through those doors to see the sweaty, smiling faces of my CrossFit family.
Any advice for people just getting started? Take it slow and humble. CFLA has got some of the best coaches in the game so listen. If you practice efficient technique religiously speed will come naturally. I also find it important to find your happy place during WODs...a little dancing mid-workout never hurt anybody.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? Doodling and more doodling. I love practicing my hand-lettering and tackling funky freelance projects people throw my way. Check, check it out ya'll at http://www.ChinoRicanDesigns.com
