My CrossFit Confession

Posted by Danette Rivera

Here’s a confession: I don’t like to CrossFit. I mean, I don’t like to CrossFit outside of the walls of CFLA. This was made very apparent when Andy and I went to Colorado for a CF business seminar and during one of the days they asked us all to test a new baseline. My stomach sunk at the suggestion. The seminar was comprised of gym owners and managers so for the most part they were all a bunch of studs and studettes. Or so I thought. I told Andy, “I’ll just observe.” He looked at me perplexed because he doesn’t often see me shy away from something. Then it all came pouring out – as much to my surprise as his – about how I didn’t want to represent CFLA in front of others when, as one of the leaders, I was such a mediocre athlete. I didn’t care about embarrassing myself. As its representative, I didn’t want to embarrass the gym. Continue reading here...

The Tree

Posted by Andy Petranek

When there is risk, there is aliveness. There is fear, accompanied by extreme alertness, consciousness. There are consequences, that could lead to undesirable results... and there is exuberance, fun, joy, and flow. Generally, the greater the risk for me, the greater the fun.

I was reminded of these things on my recent snowboarding trip to British Columbia. On the third of four days, on just about the last run, I was coming down a fairly ordinary slope, ordinary, at least, for the backcountry of BC... steep slope, powder up to my waist, small avalanche possibility, and burnt trees (burnt from a previous season's forest fire) everywhere. As I headed down the slope, all was good... steep runs with good slope are my specialty... I do really well when I'm I have the momentum and speed that a steep slope creates.

14.5 in the Books: WE DID IT!

Posted by Kenny Kane

The objective this year for the Open was simple - have fun. Week after week our team captains Ross, Courtney, Patty, Cerussi and co-captains Maggie, Andy D, SWong and Cannon led us all down that path wonderfully. I’ll be honest - this has been my favorite Open yet. It’s not just that we identified four things that are important - Participation, Philanthropy, Spirit, and Performance and deliver on each. It’s how we deliver the essence of these qualities. All of this came to a beautiful head Saturday at Trojan Crossfit in downtown LA. Effectively, we went downtown as a loving, silly, butt kicking, loving, encouraging, $3K donating TEAM. Congrats to all that competed in the Open - we did it, and man did we do it well... We Can’t Control Everything, But When We Can ...

Posted by Danette Rivera

You’ve probably heard that on Saturday we’re spending our last Philanthropic Throwdown, Open 14.5, at Trojan CrossFit with three other gyms that have also been raising money for the Aspire Center. Exciting stuff – think of it as a field trip! -- yet, honestly we really don’t know what to expect. The exact details are still a bit vague until the logistics of the workout are figured out. Look for an email on Friday afternoon with more details. Continue reading here...

Who Are You When Faced with Limitations?

Posted by Danette Rivera

This past week, I watched a lot of people do the 14.4 Open workout; from my own amazing CFLA teammates to Rich Froning’s video where he makes all the things that feel so hard for us look so easy -- as usual. I love it all. I respect it all. But two performances in particular were the most memorable for me. The first was Kevin Ogar's adapted 14.4. As I watched him, the farthest thought from my mind was pity. In fact, it inspired me wildly because he is able to access his fullest potential in the moment, no matter the level of potential or the degree in which he is able to do something.... The Beauty of Competition

Posted by Kenny Kane

So many brilliant moments Saturday: Shirley's elegant ferocity and Muscle up, GC's "1000 Mile Stare", Stanwyck going "Old Man Stong," Cerussi being a "Clean Machine," Ry-Ry tossing the barbell like a balloon... In the video below you'll see determination, will, focus, love, support, camaraderie, and the joy of a game day break through. Thank you Maggie for making inspiration so beautiful.... CFLA Athlete Profile - Ryan Gorman

Posted by Danette Rivera

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD... what was it, and how did it feel? I can’t remember my first WOD, but I was doing it alongside my middle-aged co-workers who were kicking my ass. I was interning at Reebok going into my senior year and should have been in the best shape of my life—CrossFit was very humbling to say the least! When I started back up again in fall 2012, my first workout was Grace. I did it with 55 lbs and don’t even think I knew what the Rx’d weight was (or what Rx’d even meant)... In Their Own Words...
My daughter has been going to CFLAKids for nearly two months and she loves it. I love it for her. She is, in general, very athletic and coming here fosters her desire to be competitive, which is important to me. Girls should be able to let this side thrive, if they want it.. The classes make her stronger and faster and more able to enjoy the other sports she's involved in. - Danette R.
