When did you first start CrossFitting?: Anya-July 2010; Tim-January 2012

Least Favorite WOD: Anya-Filthy Fifty..it never seems to end; Tim- Anything with handstands
Tell us about you sports & fitness background: Anya- I played saturday morning soccer like all the suburban kids, weekly gymnastics with my school friends and dabbled in a few other activities. Nothing stuck. In 8th grade my dad bet me $20 I couldn't carry a picnic table on my back to the side patio, 10 minutes later he was down some cash. I was fast and strong but unfocused and got bored easily. I found lacrosse that year, became hooked and played through high school....then college happened and anything fitness related came to a screeching halt. I liked pushing myself physically, but was never able to self motivate. Classes weren't for me, they were never enough. I needed something that had a team element but also set me up to compete against myself -enter crossfit.
Tim-I have always been active in team and individual sports since being a kid. I really like the mental challenge of individual sports and it took me to playing tennis at the college level. Team sports offered the social and strategic opportunity of trying to beat your opponent that I enjoyed; youth ice hockey gave me that chance. There really is not a sport that I have not tried, but I continue to participate in the ones that give me a cardio workout and ones with the strategic and mental requirements to participate in.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD... what was it, and how did it feel? Anya- I walked into CrossFit New England on a saturday afternoon for an informational session after hearing about it from a girlfriend who lived in Nor Cal. Walked into what I now know was FGB and I was terrified. It was loud, people were screaming and throwing heavy weights around like toothpicks. I told myself "30 days" was a good block to either get it or not. The first class was humbling, I always thought I was much tougher than I proved to be that day. I dont remember the exact WOD, I just remember feeling that there was no way it was acceptable. I wanted to be better I wanted to be faster. So I went back the next day, and the next and the next....
Tim- My first exposure was when Anya joined CFNE and brought home stories of people pushing tires, jumping on boxes and trying to stop their hands from bleeding all over the gym during workouts. At first it sounded cool, but after seeing the other members and their incredible physical condition, I came up with a millions excused why I didn’t want to join. About 6 months ago, I found myself unhappy with my normal workout routine, running outside, hotel gyms; I needed more. I got up the courage to go to an intro class and ever since I have been hooked and totally supportive of the community. I don’t remember my first WOD, but I do remember it included HSPU, it was not pretty.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? Anya- When I first started it was 9mo after having my second baby, I had a lot of work to do. I thought I ate moderately well and used to do the elliptical at the club a few times a week which in my mind was a good effort. I was SO wrong about everything. I am a totally different person now, I look at pictures from that time and wonder who that person was?! My eating was NOT clean, I was too into calorie counts, fake sugar and "healthy" connivence foods. And my workout routine was a joke. Adopting Paleo has made a huge impact on my life and our family. When I eat cleaner I perform better, when Im better in the gym I feel better in life and am able to be a better person, mom and wife. I sleep better and I have more energy. Our whole house is pretty much Paleo, even our girls have really learned a lot about clean eating and the importance of protein and good fats.
Tim- Before CF, my eating habits were pretty bad. There was no carb and no sugar I ever said no to. It was never a concern because I never really got big, but I sure was not lean. During my CF intro, the coach talked a lot about training great athletes, and great athletes not only take care of themselves in the gym, but they eat and sleep right too. I said to myself, if I’m going to do this, I’m going to do this right. So for the last 6 months, I have followed the paleo style of eating, cutting out carbs, dairy, sugar, processed foods and really stuck to lean meats, veggies, and fruits. The sugar cheats happen now and then, but its unbelievable what eating right and physical exercise can do to your mental and physical state.
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? Anya- Thought I was going to walk in, workout and go home. Some of my best life long friends are people I have meet at crossfit and THAT is amazingly awesome to me.
Tim- t’s the community around CF that really surprised me. I never would have thought before starting CF that I would build good friendships with people in a gym and actually really want to hang out them outside the gym.
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFLA moments: "Wait, do you know you look like Niki?!" once.every.single.day. (though technically she looks like me, I think I have a few years or maybe a decade on her) looking forward to many moments and many years at CFLA
Tim- Its only been four weeks since I joined CFLA, but I thought the Hooverball tournament was very cool. Everyone really encouraged me to come out and play and it was a really great day run by Sam.
Any advice for people just getting started? Anya- Walk in the door, you will find so much support and encouragement in every aspect. Give it that first 30 days and you'll see so much change physically and mentally you will wonder why it took you so long to start.
Tim- Embrace the community. Listen to the coaches. Reach high and achieve greatness.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? Anya- I love being creative for my girls with projects and snacks and games. I love entertaining, planning parties and big sunday dinners. I love to cook and fortunately for us, Im a terrible baker. I love my friends/family and would offer up a kidney to any of them at any moment. My interests are vast and will try almost anything once. Except yoga, I wont try yoga. I love the beach and the sun and haven't been happier living anywhere else.
Tim- Beach time with Anya and girls, tequila at sunset in ocean park and riding my new beach cruiser on the boardwalk. And the occasional cinnamon roll from Huckleberry (the real reason we moved to SM)
