ATHLETE PROFILE: Carina Polini
Hometown: Laguna Hills, CA
When did you first start CrossFitting?: January 2012
When did you first start training at CFLA?: January 2012
Favorite WOD: I like anything with burpees and box jumps
Least Favorite WOD: Cleans
Tell us about you sports & fitness background: I've always been pretty athletic! Growing up I was a pole vaulter, dancer, soccer player and cheerleader. Outside the gym now I run, kayak, swim, and a short lived softball career. I took a line drive to the face losing some teeth and had to have my jaw wired shut, safe to say I play softball no more!
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD... what was it, and how did it feel? A friend of mine trains at CrossFit Scottsdale, and I was telling him about how I wanted to get back in shape. He encouraged me to try CrossFit, and here I am today! As for my first WOD, I just remember running. I remember running and thinking "don't throw up, don't throw up." After I was finished I just laid on the floor and thought "oh ya, i could get use to this" with a stupid smile on my face.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? I dropped some weight and some inches, mostly in thanks to the Whole Life Challenge. I also now eat paleo, and am quite the cook in the kitchen thanks to it. I get stronger everyday, and I look forward to a year from now when I am even stronger and lifting weights I never thought I could.
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? I would have to say the most unexpected thing, is that I have been eating paleo for about 6 months!! I would say everyday at CrossFit something unexpected happens. I beat my time by a little bit more, or I life more weight than I thought I could.
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFLA moments: I think my favorite moment was completing the Whole Life Challenge. It was my first challenge at the gym, and i was really worried I would not improve in the work out, I had no idea what to expect! I ended up doubling the amount of rounds I did, and improved my mile time.
Any advice for people just getting started? Having never lifted weights I felt kind of silly and weak at first lifting so much less then everyone else. But stick with it! Before you know it your lifitng more and you feel the difference! Do not let yourself get discouraged.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? Outside of CrossFit, I have my insane pitbull mix puppy Taz AKA Tasmanian Devil - if you have met him you understand why that is his name. He is a hobbie all in himself, running, hiking etc. Other than that I am pretty laid back, and just love to be outdoors! Spend lots of time at the beach, and in the water.
