As it gets closer to Thanksgiving the idea of thankfulness is ever-present. But I think mostly we are not actually present to it. Perhaps as we sit down to our dinner, depending on our circumstances we may be more or less aware, but in our every day lives the concept of thankfulness possibly escapes us.
Two Tuesdays ago my boyfriend, Winslow, went to work as usual, as the production manager at a supplement company. He was standing talking with the woman in charge of shipping when two dozen armed, Kevlar-wearing federal agents burst into the building. The employees were all escorted out at gunpoint, patted down, and interrogated for the following few hours. Their personal belongings were searched and they were threatened. They were sent home early with no explanation of what was occurring. The next day the company owner called a meeting and informed them all the company was going out of business. The feds had seized all their inventory and there was little to no hope of ever getting it back. With nothing to sell and nothing to make more product from the company was done.
Needless to say I hadn't been expecting a call from Winslow that Tuesday saying he'd been held at gunpoint. We were less surprised at him losing his job the following day. And more than anything we were immensely grateful. Grateful for each other, for our home, for our food, and for our health. We still don't know what the company was charged with or if the government will ever actually charge them with anything. What I do know is that Winslow came home safe and sound. What I know is that as unpleasant as unpleasant things are, they remind you of what's important.
This year, as Thanksgiving approaches I am more thankful than ever. And ironically, I am thankful that the upheaval has opened new doors and new opportunities for Winslow's career. In the end there are actually brighter things in store. I think it's often that way. The darkest storms reveal the brightest lights. And I, for one, am spending more time practicing daily thankfulness for those bright lights.
