Tell us about you sports & fitness background: I’m a self-proclaimed “unlikely athlete.” My family is still amazed that I ended up here, and truthfully, so am I some days. If you’ve ever seen my Throwback Thursday photos you’ll know that I was a chubby kid growing up. I hated sports and struggled with my weight. When I was 11, I dreaded PE because I couldn’t run a mile in 11:30. I always wanted to be one of those people who actually enjoyed exercise but I wasn’t. I liked musical theater. In high school I started going to the gym and trying to “diet” rather unsuccessfully. Eventually I wound up taking spin class over at Revolution and wandered into an Indo-Row class there one day the summer before I started at USC. After a few classes, the lead instructor suggested I try out for the crew team at SC. I laughed. I was no athlete. After I got past my excuses, I emailed the coach. I went down to check out the boathouse and got signed up for the novice team later that afternoon. After half a year of novice and a year on Varsity, I sought out a way to stay in shape over the summer. I found CFLA, took an intro class, and never looked back.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD... what was it, and how did it feel? When I was a sophomore, a teammate of mine told me about CrossFit. I found CFLA and scheduled an intro for the following week. Andy led my intro. When he told me I was going to do 10 pull-ups I must have looked at him like he was crazy because he grabbed a bunch of bands (all of which I needed badly.) I even tied for first place on the leader board for the 500m row but they wouldn’t let me put it up. I still signed up. I had crazy butterflies before my first class. The workout was 1 mile run for time, rest 3-5 minutes, 50 pushups 100 sit-ups 50 pushups, rest 3-5 minutes, 1 mile run for time. I almost peed my pants at the thought of having to run 2 miles…and 100 pushups?! Yikes! But I’ll never forget coming back in from the first mile and being so surprised at my time! I ran it in 8:13, which was a huge PR for me. I remember I left smiling like an idiot though and sitting in the car calling my mom to tell her how excited I was. It was so hard but I felt unbelievably accomplished and challenged. It was an amazing beginning to a great adventure.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)?
1. I don’t have asthma anymore. (I DON’T HAVE ASTHMA ANYMORE!)
2. My entire relationship with food has changed. I went from eating anything I wanted after crew practice to treating food as fuel.
3. I’m stronger and I can lift heavy sh*t.
4. I don’t hate running anymore!
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? I look forward to going to the gym. It’s my second home. I love you guys. You are my family and my team. Even if I just met you, if I’m taking class with you we are on a team...just in case you didn’t know. That’s what I loved about rowing, it’s what I love about CFLA—my community. You are my people.
AND I’m coaching now. I didn’t know I wanted to coach for a long time, but I really truly love it.
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFLA moments: Open workout Saturdays, my first competition, the B-Team soon to be the A-team, teaching my first solo class, Fight Gone Bad fundraisers, PRing on anything ever, the CFLA holiday party (one word: photobooth), silly nights out, my GBF, cheering on my friends during workouts, watching people PR in my classes, Lauren reminding me to stop being so hard on myself basically everyday, KK getting me to smile mid-wod, the first time I scored for the team in the open, early Sunday morning Team workouts followed by farmers market breakfast last year, Gym-wide Challenge finals days, meeting an amazing group of people in London because of Crossfit, doing my first dead hang pull-up, Hooverball, beating my 500m row PR from when I was actually rowing, Femme Royale, being the only girl in the advanced division that one time, my 21st birthday at Ricks/finally not having to go home when everyone else went out . . .The list could go on and on and on.
Any advice for people just getting started? Keep a journal! Get into the habit of writing things down. I religiously kept a workout journal for the first year and a half I did Crossfit. I treasure it because it’s so amazing to look back and see how far I’ve come. Keep showing up. Don’t be afraid to try the things that scare you and really try them. So maybe you miss the lift—we all do sometimes. Challenge yourself, because you’ll be surprised at what you’re capable of.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? I really like trying weird foods—I guess you could say I have an adventurous palate. I also love to travel. I do a really good Disney princess voice. I enjoy hiking and sometimes doing yoga. I love to swim in the ocean or in lakes when I travel. I swim away from shore until I can’t hear the people on the beach and just spend a few minutes floating there. It’s very peaceful and always gets me really present in the moment. And finally, I like to sing!
