Tell us about you sports & fitness background: Growing up in New Jersey in the 70’s & 80’s words like “exercise,” “healthy eating,” “active lifestyle” were not part of our family’s vocabulary. When I moved to NYC in the late 80‘s the fitness craze was in full swing and my hidden, inner athlete was awakened! I was one of the original members at Equinox’s first location on the Upper West Side and I fell hard for a “high-impact” aerobics instructor named Ed. I followed him like a “groupie” to studios all over NYC! A few years later, a girlfriend suggested we join a running group (mainly to meet single men!) that met on the weekends in Central Park. I never met a man, but my love/hate relationship with running blossomed. My goal of running the NYC Marathon was cut short when I was transferred to Los Angeles for my job in 1993. I was so ecstatic to be able to run outside year round that I began my marathon training. In March 1999, I did it! I ran the LA Marathon in a little over 6 hours...and never ran again. I gave birth at the end of that year and my daughter is turning 14. Over the years, I tried many different workouts/gyms/programs, but never felt part of a community like I do here at CFLA.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD... what was it, and how did it feel? IMy daughter and Danette’s (Dizzle) daughter are friends and play tennis together. I knew that Danette was a trainer at CrossFit, but I was way too intimidated to ever try it. One night, my daughter and I ran into Danette at Whole Foods and she convinced me to try her women’s class. I took her up on her offer and haven’t looked back. I never imagined that a trip to Whole Foods would change my life!! I thought my first workout (which was only 7 minutes!) was going to kill me! It was my Orientation Class on a Saturday morning. From what I can remember, I think I attempted something that simulated a pull - up, did a little rowing, and another exercise (possibly push-ups?) that I could NOT do. I swore to myself that if I lived, I was never going to stop. And 7 months later, I have stayed true to that promise and have been consistently CrossFitting 2x a week since that dreadful Saturday!
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? Overall since starting CF, I feel stronger, healthier, and definitely more fit. I just completed my first Whole Life Challenge and lost 8 pounds and almost 2% body fat!! I am looking forward to starting the next one in January. I am also mentally stronger and seeing the WOD on the board doesn’t scare me anymore because I know I CAN do it!
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? The most unexpected new mind-set that I have completely embraced is the feeling of being sore and in pain is a GOOD thing! I am forever grateful for the never-ending support of the Tuesday/Thursday women. I can’t thank them enough -- they are so strong and beautiful and inspire me to keep going!! I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Danette for being my biggest cheerleader, I love you Danette!!
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFLA moments: It makes me so proud that my daughter is part of the CFLA teen prodigy program and my husband just started CrossFitting too!
Any advice for people just getting started?
I have two pieces of advice for anyone just getting started:
Number 1 - If a middle aged stay-at-home-mom like me can do these workouts, ANYONE can!
And, Number 2 - Once you start...DO NOT STOP!!
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? I am a full-time chauffeur, dog-walker, chef, and housekeeping manager for my family. In my spare time, I am developing a television comedy based on the friendship of 5 middle-aged women and their dysfunctional families...are there any CrossFit agents or writers reading this???
