ATHLETE PROFILE: Justin Remeny
Hometown: Santa Monica
Occupation: I am the president of Remy Leather - we domestically manufacture high-end leather jackets.
When did you first start CrossFitting? December 2012
When did you first start training at CFLA? December 2012
Favorite WOD: I like team based workouts
Least Favorite WOD: Anything with too many burpees
Tell us about you sports & fitness background: I grew up playing lots of sports, spending most of my time outside. I was an avid skateboarder through junior high, and then found volleyball. I played volleyball competitively all through high school and college. After college I still played a bit but got quite lethargic. Ran two marathons, but that didn’t excite me enough to stick with it. That’s what brought me to CrossFit.
How did you first get exposed to CrossFit? Take us back to your first WOD... what was it, and how did it feel? I first saw CrossFit on ESPN, and I thought what a cool concept. My first WOD was the Baseline. I had always thought of myself as an athlete, so when I saw the workout I thought I can kill this. Well, I went balls to the wall, had what I thought was a pretty good time, and then proceeded to “redecorate” the alley for the next 5 minutes. That’s when I knew I was hooked on CrossFit -- it was an unexpected challenge.
What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CF (before/after)? I have seen the obvious changes, more muscle, smaller waist line (I look damn good in a suit now), and those kind of things. The greatest change though has been the increase in energy and endurance I’ve gained when playing with my boys; and I know they’ve noticed it as well.
What sort of changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit that were totally unexpected? As hokey as it sounds, the community aspect of CFLA makes it a joy to come to class. For me, it’s a great way to decompress and unwind at the end of the day.
Please share with us any favorite CrossFit / CFLA moments: I think it was after doing the Filthy Fifty for the first time. I came home and was telling my wife how grueling it was. When I went in to my son’s room (he’s a 5 year old crossfitter himself) he asked me if we did burpees. I said yes, 50 of them and it was really tough. He put down his legos stood up, rocked out 50 burpees and went back to his legos like it was nothing. I couldn’t stop laughing.
Any advice for people just getting started? Enjoy it, don’t feel intimidated when you walk in, everyone there had to start at the beginning. The only person you really need to compete with is yourself. And get to know the people at CFLA, there are some really good ones.
What are your hobbies, interests and/or talents outside of CrossFit? I’m an avid fan of just about any outdoor activity, whether it be hiking, scuba diving, or some other sport. I will play some poker any chance I get. Also, to the detriment of my waist, I am a huge foodie, and a bit of a wine geek. I love to travel, and have two more continents to visit to get all 7 under my belt (Yes I even want to visit Antarctica).
