The other day, I was sitting, talking to my friend (and CFLA student) Clark. I had just come back to LA from a trip to Chicago where, among other fun stuff, I had seen a Roy Lichtenstein exhibit at the Art Institute. This led to my bold declaration: “Chicago is just so rich with culture. LA doesn’t have that."
“Hmm.” Clark uttered in response. “I’ve always found LA to have an amazing scene for the arts. There’s so much going on here at any given time. Have you been to LACMA?”
“Well, no. I’ve been to the Getty a few times.”
“How about the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach?”
“The Huntington Library & Gardens in Pasadena?”
“Uhh…no. But, see, none of my friends will want to go to a museum.”
“Are you kidding me?? There’s a new piece at LACMA that’s a gigantic model city with matchbox cars whizzing around! You can’t convince someone to go see that??”
No longer able to cling to my excuses, I went to LACMA and watched those awesome matchbox cars whizz around that very afternoon. And it was fantastic! The next weekend, I took a friend to the "Who Shot Rock & Roll?" exhibition at the Annenberg. I went to see some Ernst Haas photos at Bergamot station. Then Herb Ritts at the Getty.
But it didn't just stop there. This went WAY beyond art appreciation. I have a lot of excuses why my life isn't quite how I want it to be. I pine for some life that I wish I had, rather than just jumping in and inhabiting the one I do. Seeing art was just one thing I missed. I love pickup basketball...but I could "never get a game together." Well some friends of mine actually like basketball, too...so we've started going to the park and playing full court 5-on-5 every Friday!
Everywhere I look in my life where something's missing, there's an excuse. And it's never my problem...too much traffic, the people are too shallow, LA is this, LA isn't that, blah blah blah. When I actually decide to do something about it, an amazing thing happens: I have exactly the experience I said I couldn't! When I compare my life to something it isn't, I get kinda bummed out. When I jump in and inhabit my life, it's actually pretty great!
Even if there is way too much traffic...
