Wow... today is Sam's last day as a coach at CFLA... it's also his last day in Southern California. Funny, on one hand, it feels like just yesterday that he arrived here, so young, so fresh, so green, eyes full of wonder... and on the other, it feels like he's been here a millennia - confident, strong, fluent as a coach, knowledgable, trustworthy. And while he has been responsible for his growth over the past 3 years (and believe me, there has been a lot!), he's had a partner in his growth and development that you may not have considered.
You see, Sam couldn't have grown the way he has in a vacuum. All the books and YouTube videos in the world couldn't possibly have given him the results he got in the three years he was here. His partner in this has been this CFLA Community. We have been co-responsible for Sam's growth and development. We have shaped and molded him into the awesome human he is today (ahem, not that he wasn't before, ahem...). We all, by showing up as a request for instruction whether he was ready or not to give it to you or not, by holding him to his word, by insisting that he's on time, by showing him what it's like to have integrity, by believing in a version of Sam that he, many-a-time, might not have believed himself, we have been instrumental in helping to make him into the person he is today. Sam is a reflection of our community - which is a reflection of each of you. And as you look at Sam and like what you see, I'd say you have a lot to be proud of, a lot to appreciate, a lot to acknowledge, not just in Sam, but in every single one of you - in us.
I say kudos to you... We are giving the gift of Sam back to the rest of the world today. Sure, we'll miss him, but in his departure, he takes with him a piece of each and every one of you that helped make him who he is today, something he can never shake, get rid of or put away (sorry Sam, you're stuck with us)... just as our community looks forward, toward developing more of tomorrow's leaders... starting today.
